Donors

The European Commission initiated the Trust Fund in 2008 with a donation of one million euros, and renewed the grant in 2009 with another one million euros. With the total donation of two million euros, the European Commission remains the biggest single donor to the EHU Trust Fund, accounting for more than one half of all the funding committed to the Trust Fund so far. The EC donations come from the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). The EC supported the EHU already before the establishment of the Trust Fund with altogether 6.7 million EUR.

The Nordic Council of Ministers administers the Trust Fund and has committed 1.252.000 EUR of its own funding to the Fund. The NCM also has contributed to the EHU before the establishment of the Trust Fund with a total of 1.2 million EUR. In addition to managing the Trust Fund, the NCM has administered the previous EC funding to the EHU.

Lithuania has committed ca. 460.000 EUR to the Trust Fund over two years (2009-2010). Lithuania is the host country for the EHU, and has supported the EHU in various ways, including providing the premises free of charge, granting EHU university status in Lithuania, and guaranteeing visas for the students and teachers.

Sweden has committed 6 million Swedish kronor (ca. 600.000 EUR) to the Trust Fund over three years (2008-2010). Sweden also has been a donor before the establishment of the Trust Fund through the NCM and bilaterally, making it currently the biggest donor country to the EHU.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has awarded 600.000 USD (approximately 430.000 EUR) to the Trust Fund over three years, starting in 2009. The MacArthur Foundation, located in Chicago, supported the EHU already in Minsk and has continued to do so with major grants also in Vilnius. MacArthur is the first private foundation to join the EHU Trust Fund.

Norway has committed 360.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in over three years (2008-2010). Norway supported the EHU before the establishment of the Trust Fund with 107.000 EUR, administered by the NCM.

The United States of America has pledged 500.000 USD (approximately 355.000 EUR) through USAID to the Trust Fund in 2009. The United States is a long-term supporter of the EHU, contributing also through other channels.

Denmark initially committed 150.000 EUR to the Trust Fund over two years (2008-2009), and renewed its grant with the same sum for 2010-2011, bringing the total commitment to 300.000 EUR.

The Czech Republic committed 200.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2008, and has donated an additional 10.000 EUR in 2009.

Finland has donated 150.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2009. Finland has been a supporter before the establishment of the Trust Fund through the NCM, with the the previous donations amounting to a total of 160.000 EUR.

Greece has committed 100.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2008.

France donated 30.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2008, and has committed an additional 20.000 EUR in 2009. France supported the EHU before the establishment of the Trust Fund with 50.000 EUR, administered by the NCM. France was also a donor when EHU was based in Minsk.

Hungary has committed 50.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2008. Hungary supported the EHU before the establishment of the Trust Fund with 50.000 EUR, administered by the NCM. 

Ireland donated 50.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2008. Ireland also supports the EHU through a bilateral project.

Poland has committed 50.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2009. 

Spain donated 50.000 EUR to the Trust Fund in 2008.

Estonia donated 450.000 Estonian krooni (ca. 29.000 EUR) to the Trust Fund in 2008, and an additional 200.000 krooni (13.000 EUR) in 2009, making a total of 42.000 EUR.

Discussions on further donations are ongoing.
